Cyclone Idai: Fears for 500,000 people as 90% of Mozambiqu

Fears are growing for more than 500,000 people in the Mozambique city of Beira, after a

id agency officials warned that 90% of the area had been “destroyed” by Cyclone Idai.

The cyclone slammed into the southeast African country as a high-end Category 2 storm with 175 kph (110 mph winds) at midn

ight Thursday, causing widespread devastation, before moving inland into Zimbabwe and Malawi.

In an address on national radio Monday, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi warned that while the official death toll

stood at 84, “everything indicates that we can have a record of more than 1,000 dead.”

Nyusi described seeing “bodies floating” in the water after two rivers broke their banks “wiping out entire vil

lages ” and isolating others. “It’s a real humanitarian disaster of large proportions,” said Nyusi.

My sincere and heartfelt thanks to my respected elde

brother, Mukesh, and Nita, for standing by me during these trying times, and de

monstrating the importance of staying true to our strong family values by extending this timely support,” he said.

Shares in Reliance Communications spiked 10% in Mumbai on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Mukesh Ambani’s company declined to comment on how much of

the 5.5 billion rupees he provided, but local media reported it was around 4.8 billion ($70 million).

A spokesperson for Reliance Communications didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the end, they divided up Reliance’s array of business

es that cover industries such as energy, retail and financial services. But their fortunes have gone in vastly different directions since then.

Mukesh Ambani’s fortune tops $54 billion, while his younger brother has dropped out

of the billionaires club and is now worth only $300 million, according to Bloomberg.

In his statement on Monday, Anil Ambani said the siblings have now put their differences behind them.

”I and my family are grateful we have moved beyond the past, and are deeply grateful and touched with this gesture,” he said.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has rejected Elon Musk’s claims that the regulator is unfairly trying to silence him.

In a filing Monday, the SEC said it was “stunning” that the bi

llionaire business leader had continued to fire off tweets about Tesla without consulting others

at the company despite having agreed to a court-ordered settlement requiring him to do so.

The filing is the latest salvo in a protracted battle between

the SEC and Musk, who has been outspoken in his criticism of the securities regulator.

In the fall, Musk agreed to a court-approved deal with the SEC in

r to settle charges over his controversial tweet in August about his plans to take Tesla private. The settlem

ent stipulated that Musk receive pre-approval for any social media posts containing information that is “material” to Te

sla shareholders. At the time, the electric carmaker said it would establish a board committee to oversee its CEO’s posts.

But the SEC has since found fault with Musk’s tweeting. In late February, the commissi

on filed a motion asking a federal judge to hold Musk in contempt for violating the terms of the settlement.

The SEC cited a tweet from February 19 in which Musk said Tesla

would build 500,000 cars in 2019. He then tweeted a clarifying message that Tesla would be build

ing at an annual rate of 500,000 cars by the end of the year, but would actually only make 400,000 cars in 2019.

Musk fired back last week, arguing that the tweet didn’t contain material information about Tesla, that he diligent

ly tried to follow the court settlement, and that the SEC’s request is a breach of his constitutional right to free speech.

The pre-approval requirement was designed to protect agai

nst reckless conduct by Musk going forward,” the agency said. “It is therefore stunning to learn that, at the time of fil

ing of the [contempt] motion, Musk had not sought pre-approval for a single one of the nume

rous tweets about Tesla he published in the months since the court-ordered pre-approval policy went into effect.”

Musk is interpreting the settlement “as not requiring pre-approval unless Musk himself unil

aterally decides his planned tweets are material,” the agency said, adding that such an approach is “inco

nsistent with the plain terms” of the settlement and makes the pre-approval requirement “meaningless.”

The SEC also said that Musk has “made no diligent or good faith effort to comply with the pre-approval provision of the court’s order.”

And it dismissed the Tesla CEO’s argument that his First Amendment rights are being

violated because needing pre-approval for his tweets does not mean “that he is prohibited from speaking.”

Lawyers representing Musk responded with a court filing seeking permission to a

ddress “unsupported assertions” made by the SEC and to submit documentation that “un

dermines” the regulator’s position. Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Still, they are just the tip of the cat economy iceberg. Medi

care, theme parks, pet boarding services are expanding the sector.

The Spring Festival holiday in February was a peak period for such services as more pet ow

ners tended to make use of luxury pet hotels as ordinary boarding kennels were overbooked.

Beijing-based Liu Ronghuan, 35, a college teacher, said she was quite satisfied with the pet hotel she chose for her cat.

It offered fancy services like massages, beauty salons, and pet portrait photos. The s

even-day stay cost Liu about 5,000 yuan, almost the same price as a three-star hotel room.

“Compared with the price, I cared more about whe

ther my cat was having an enjoyable time during the family reunion time,” Liu said.

Major world social media including Facebook, Googl

One of the shooters appeared to have live-streamed the attacks on Facebook that pur

portedly showed a gunman walking into a mosque and opening fire on the prayers.

The account of the shooter has now been removed from Facebook, and many other pos

Huawei, which is a private company that has no affiliation

to the government, can provide the most advanced technologies and equipment for 5G mobile net

works. Those trying to block it on national security grounds are simply not keeping up with the times.

No country has provided any solid evidence to support the accusations that the Chinese telecoms giant presents a threat.

What they’ve done to Huawei will, as technology progresses, be show

n to be nothing more than a political farce.China Saturday announced specific rules con

cerning tax exemption to reduce the amount of individual income tax (IIT) paid on incomes earned overseas.

According to the rules jointly unveiled by the Ministry of Finance and

State Taxation Administration (STA), individuals who have lived on the Chines

e mainland for six consecutive years and have stayed there for 183 days or more each year will need to pay IIT on th

eir overseas-sourced incomes. Otherwise, their incomes earned overseas will be IIT exempt.

The clock for the six-year period will be reset if the individual leaves the mainland for more than 30 consecutive days in a year, according to the rules.
